Great Day for Green Party solidarity with Palestine: Fri Jan 12

Posted 4:04 pm Jan 12,2024 CT
Two events important for GP support for Palestine happened on Jan 12 .

You probably know that the St L Board of Aldermen passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire.

At least 2 GP of St L were there, calling for passage.

What you may not know is that 6 GP folks went to Dar Al-Salam Masjid in Ballwin to speak, distribute our flyer on Palestine, and ask people to sign the petition to get the GP on the ballot.

They were Barbara, Angie, Stan, Chris, Bob and me.

(Bob had just returned from several weeks in Palestine and should be sharing his experiences at the GP zoom Wed Jan 17.)

Adnan Sadiq and Walid Badr both familiarized us with Muslim customs before we went.

That contributed a lot to our being extremely well-received. Male Greens handed out flyers to men who came in and female Greens to women who came to the service.

We distributed close to 500 flyers – it looked like > 1000 people came to the 2 services, one at 12:30 and the other at 1:30.

Barbara recalls that every woman accepted a flyer and some men asked her for one.

One Muslim woman was so enthusiastic that she begin telling people very loudly, “Sign this to help the Green Party.” She got more people to sign than any of the GP folks did.

However, several problems hurt petitioning efforts.

We seriously underestimated how many people would be moving rapidly from the masjid and did not have nearly enough petition boards. We did not check out our pens first & all of the blue ones were bad.

I had made sign-up sheets for those interested in the Green Party and forgot to bring them.

We only got 127 signatures but maybe could have gotten twice that if there had been petition boards.

Since there were so many people coming out so fast, we could have used several more people.

I am trying to get contact info for masjids in St L and then in KC. Best, Don
